A heavy foot on the gas pedal was beneficial for David Murray Jr, Mike Nichols, Jesse Sobbing, Anthony Martin and Dalton Smith as they notched IMCA feature wins during the opening night of the 2012 Racing Campaign at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska.
Getting a big jump on the field in the IMCA Modified field from the start, David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas piloted his familiar 97m to the high side and into the top five in the early laps, and challenged pole sitter and heat race winner Dylan Smith of Osceola, Nebraska for the lead as the race neared the halfway point. Murray fought off the challenges throughout the caution periods and restarts from Smith and Jay Steffens of North Platte, Nebraska. Murray was unfazed as he took the checkered flag to pick up the Feature win. Feeling the pressure from cars on his back bumper, wasn’t enough to throw Dylan Smith off his game, as he finished second overall. The battle for third place was won by Jay Steffens, as he edged heat race winner Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, who finished fourth. Rounding out the top five with a stellar run through the field was Davenport’s Scott Smith. Knocking on the door of top five accolades at Lexington were Cole Hodges of Ogallala and Jim Mlady in sixth and seventh overall.
Getting up on the wheel and running to the front in the IMCA Stock Car race was Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa. Nichols started in the fifth row, and was able to find a low groove that worked for the Medieval chassis #63 to work its way towards the front, where he eventually took the checkered flag in fine fashion, just edging Casey Werkmeister of Maywood by the slimmest of margins at the finish line. Werkmeister drove his #24w Cutlass to the second place podium position. Within the thick of things and in the logjam at the front of the field for much of the Stock Car Feature was Casey Woken of Ogallala, Nebraska; Wallace, Nebraska’s Brandon Clough and Mikey Dancer of North Platte, Nebraska, who ended up third, fourth and fifth, respectively when the smoke and dust cleared during the Feature for the Stock Cars at Dawson County Raceway. Keeping the heavy pressure applied to the top five drivers during the final laps wasn’t quite enough to notch a top five on this night. Staying consistent during the last half of the race and in position to move into the top five if a slip-up happened in front of them was Sara Powers of North Platte, Nebraska and Bob Hoing of Overton, Nebraska; as they crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh overall.
Coming a long ways for the win in the Awards Plus IMCA Northern Sport Mods, Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa continued his winning tradition. Sobbing in his Tasmanian Devil themed Razor chassis was able to work his way past Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas; the early leader, when the 55 rocket of Frye was the early leader, as he was picking up steam and running away. Despite the mechanical front end issues, Frye held onto second place. Sobbing and Frye were the heat race winners also on Sunday. Persevering and staying focused on the issue at hand though the yellow flags was Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska and Gothenburg, Nebraska’s Jamey Kennicutt as the finished third and fourth. Rounding out the top five on his hometown oval was Lexington’s very-own Craig Howard of Lexington, Nebraska.
Winning the shuffle at the front of the field in the Plum Creek Motors IMCA Hobby Stocks was Wilcox, Nebraska’s Anthony Martin as he claimed the opening night victory at Dawson County Raceway. Martin had to fight off valiant challenges for the lead in the final laps after taking the lead in the feature race from Campbell’s Dillon Thompson and Fullerton’s Jim Buss, who finished second and third in the highlighted race. Before retiring from the field as a result of mechanical issues in the front suspension, heat race winner Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk, Nebraska was on a mission and had nobody to chase on the oval, but lapped cars, as she led the first ten laps of the race. Getting their nose into the mix to compete for the win in the early going, was very beneficial for heat race winner Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island and Kearney, Nebraska’s Adam Morgan to stay away from incidents and earn fourth and fifth place honors.
In their seasoning opening battle for supremacy in the IMCA Sport Compact division, Dalton Smith of Gibbon, Nebraska showcased his skill and guts. Smith won the last four-cylinder shootout, which was held at Dawson County Raceway during the 2011 season. Smith took over the lead at the right time, and held on, fighting off the efforts of Jose Sabala of North Platte, Nebraska; who crossed the finish line in second place. The Grand Island, Nebraska racer David Dembowski was on the money and earned third place honors for his efforts on the Lexington, Nebraska oval on opening night. Winning the heat race for the Sport Compacts was Jose Sabala of North Platte. Holding on through the treacherous corners and straightaways, Brett Johnson of Riverdale, Nebraska and Justice Colston of Grand Island rounded out the top five finishers in fourth and fifth place overall.
