The fans on the stands were on the edges of their seats as the racing action was as smoking hot as the weather at the Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday night. Winning the IMCA feature events on June 3rd were David Murray Jr, Mike Nichols, Jesse Sobbing, Tyler Andreasen and Dalton Smith. Picking up the win in the touring Nebraska Modified Lites Feature was Robert Mros.
Doing what he has done for years was David Murray Jr, of Oberlin, Kansas in notching the Feature win in the IMCA Modified division after getting a great restart near the midway point of the event. Murray started in the seventh row and was able to get to the front of the field on lap nine, working the low racing groove of the 3/8 mile oval in Lexington. Fighting off all challengers over the remaining laps, Murray was able to get his DMR by BMS chassis to hold ship to the checkered flags. Using his starting position to his advantage, Ogallala, Nebraska’s Cole Hodges lead the initial six laps of the feature event and was looking to run-off and hide at the front of the field prior to a caution flag on lap six. Heat race winner Hodges battled through the traffic and picked up runner-up honors. Scott Smith of Davenport, Nebraska started in the middle of the pack in the Feature event, and quickly got within the top five at the drop of the green flag. Smith stayed within reach of the leaders and crossed the finish line in third place. Battling it out for fourth place until the final inches of the race, were Cale Osborn of Cozad, Nebraska and North Platte, Nebraska’s Jay Steffens. At the line, Osborn edged Steffens for fourth place, Steffens finished fifth overall. Just missing a top five finish was Charley Brown of Maxwell, Nebraska; who led laps seven and eight before having a minor mishap with the inside berm in corner one and two. Steve Aitken of Cozad, Nebraska won a heat race in preliminary action in the Modified division.
Going blow-for-blow like it was a heavyweight boxing match were Harlan, Iowa’s Mike Nichols and Maywood, Nebraska’s Casey Werkmeister for top honors in the IMCA Stock Car Feature event. The duo battled for the lead after lap five with neither having a distinct lead until the white flag lap when Nichols slid past Werkmeister and held the position to take the checkered flag win in the stock car division. Heat race winner Werkmeister was a strong second place finisher in the feature. Coming home in third place and earning a spot on the podium was Brandon Clough of Wallace, Nebraska from his middle of the pack starting position. Finishing fourth overall after leading the first four laps from his third row starting position was Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg, Nebraska. Rounding out your top five in the Stock Car Feature was North Platte, Nebraska’s Mikey Dancer. Casey Woken of Ogallala, Nebraska won the opening heat race in the Stock Car division, finishing sixth overall in the feature event.
Making the long haul from Glenwood, Iowa was well worth the trip for Jesse Sobbing, who took home the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature win, despite the heavy pressure from runner-up Tyler Frye. Sobbing took the lead from Shane Stout of North Platte, Nebraska on lap four and held the position until Frye found the cushion and rode the momentum past Sobbing at the halfway point of the feature, lap 10. Frye now had the lead and would continue to pace the field from the front, until Sobbing struck back for good in taking the lead with two laps remaining to etch the Feature win for Sobbing. Frye came home in second place overall. Gothenburg, Nebraska’s Jamey Kennicutt had an outstanding outing on the oval in Lexington to finish third overall. Sobbing, Frye and Kennicutt were the night’s heat race victors. Keeping the hot right foot Dillon Schultz of North Platte, Nebraska and James Libra of Overton, Nebraska rounded out the top five, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
Grand Island, Nebraska Wheelman Tyler Andreasen snatched the lead on the fourth circuit and ran away from the field despite the caution flags during the waning laps to earn a victory in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. Finishing second overall and making a remarkable run on the final laps from her middle of the pack starting position was Norfolk, Nebraska’s Tiffany Bittner. Fullerton, Nebraska veteran Jim Buss persevered and staying consistent each and every lap to cross the finish line in the show position. Recovering from a rollover during the last nights racing action to finish fourth overall and pick-up a belated birthday accolade was Jacob Hagan of Kearney, Nebraska. Capping the top five in the Hobby Stock feature event with a great finish from his seventh row starting position was Larry Refior of Lexington, Nebraska in fifth place. Winning the heat races in the Hobby Stock division was Russ Speck of Hastings, the early leader in the Feature race. Joing Speck in winning heat races was Anthony Martin of Wilcox, Nebraska and Dillon Thompson of Cambell, Nebraska.
No stranger to the winners circle at Dawson County Raceway is Dalton Smith of Gibbon, Nebraska; as he took the checkered flags first in the IMCA Sport Compacts Feature race. Smith ran away from the field from the onset in his Chevy Berretta to also win the heat race to complete the clean sweep for the night. Crossing the finish line second, fighting off mechanical issues in the Feature was Darrick Lamberson of Grand Island, Nebraska. Staying on the back bumper of Lamberson through the contest was the Dodge Neon of Jose Sabala of North Platte, Nebraska. Battling for top five honors and being rewarded for their efforts was David Dembowski of Grand Island and Gothenburg’s Riley Kort in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The ‘checkers or wreckers’ demeanor of Robert Mros of Phoenix, Arizona was rewarded in the Nebraska Modified Lites feature event with a checkered flag performance. Keeping the pressure on the leader was Nick Gann of Phoenix, Arizona who crossed the finish stripe in second place overall. Mros and Gann were heat race winners along with Brad Baune of Greeley, Colorado. Crete, Nebraska’s Brandon Spanjer charged forward from his third row starting position to earn show position honors. Showing off his interceptor that lit up the faces of law enforcement professionals was Terry Vantine of Crete in fourth place. Staying on the loud pedal paid off dearly for Warren Harkness of Scott City, Kansas who finished fifth overall.
