Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska partnered up with the Relay for Life organization to ‘Race for a Cure’ on Sunday night at the 3/8 mile oval that put each and every fan in the stands on the edge of their seats in five IMCA racing divisions that competed. Taking their place in the winners circle was Feature race victors Jeremy Frenier, Mike Nichols, Colton Osborn, Dillon Thompson and David Dembowski.
Leading the final seven laps after working his way through the field of fierce competitors in the IMCA Modified Feature was Fort Morgan, Colorado’s Jeremy Frenier. Heat race winner Frenier started in the fifth row of the Feature and worked the high line and rode the cushion to the front of the field and ran away with the victory. Finishing in the runner-up position in only his second night of racing at Lexington was Kyle Rohleder of Wakeeney, Kansas. Rohleder set a blistering hot pace in leading the first thirteen laps of the Feature and had built up quite a cushion between him and the rest of the field that was diminished as a result of caution flags flying and resulted in the loss of the lead to Frenier on lap 14. Starting in the second row of the Feature and staying out of trouble and heavy on the loud pedal, Cozad, Nebraska’s Steve Aitken continued his streak of top five finishes at Dawson County Raceway with third place accolades. Davenport, Nebraska’s Scott Smith and the ‘Iceman’ David Murray Jr. battled hard and clean to earn top five honors in the Feature by crossing the finish line in fourth and fifth place overall. North Platte’s Jay Steffens along with Frenier were the heat race winners in the modified division on Sunday.
Continuing his ‘drive for five’ with his stellar performances at Dawson County Raceway is National Championship IMCA Stock Car contender Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa. Nichols wasted no time at all getting to the front of the field and avoiding all incidents that sidelined racecars during the Feature. Nichols worked the high and low grooves to near perfection and was able to take the lead on lap two and never look back to earn the checkered flag in the Stock Car Feature race. On the rear bumper of Nichols racecar for the last half of the race was Maywood, Nebraska’s Casey Werkmeister. Werkmeister was in position to snare the lead on any Nichols miscue. Heat race winner Werkmeister was forced to settle for runner-up honors. Heat race victor Dan Walker of Eddyville, Nebraska led the first lap and was a close second to Nichols on lap two. Walker stayed consistent running the high groove of the oval, to earn a spot on the podium in third place overall. Putting on a stellar back-and-forth driving showcase to round out the top five finishers in the Feature was Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado and Brandon Clough of Wallace, Nebraska, as the duo finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Finding the fast groove at the right time, it seemed that Cozad’s Colton Osborn shifted gears and; ran away with the victory at the halfway point of the IMCA Northern Sport Mods Feature. Fourth row starter Osborn piloted the Dirt Boss Chassis rocketship to the front of the field on lap eleven and led the final nine laps to claim the victory. Fifth row starter Jamey Kennicutt won his heat race and when all the dust settled finished as the runner-up in the Northern Sport Mod Feature by running the low line throughout the event. Pacing the field during the initial ten laps before a caution bunched the field was Lexington’s very-own Vince Leibert. Leibert held on to a frontrunner position in taking home third place accolades in the Feature. Kearney, Nebraska’s legendary wheelman Denny Egge knows the fast way around Dawson County Raceway and was able to showcase his expertise on Sunday in finishing fourth overall. North Platte’s Shane Stout avoided incidents during the Feature to round out the top five finishers in fifth place. Heat race winner and current point’s leader Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa joined Kennicutt in winning heat races, but in Sobbings situation, he suffered mechanical issues during the feature and did not record a top finish.
Turning around a long weekend of racing with a win was Campbell, Nebraska hotshoe Dillon Thompson in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature race. Thompson displayed great comfort in piloting a borrowed car to the front of the field on lap three and never looking back in winning a caution riddled race. Running the ‘high, wide and handsome’ groove nearly paid off in a big-way for Wilcox, Nebraska’s Anthony Martin. Heat race winner Martin has been simply ‘En Fuego’ on the oval this season, and was able to earn a runner-up finish. Recovering from a heat race incident, Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk, Nebraska finished third overall with a heavy right foot that powered the gas pedal of the Big Daddy Chassis racecar from the ninth row starting position to the podium spot in third. Putting together a valiant effort to drive their way into the top five were the fourth and fifth place drivers Jeff Gimpel of Aurora, Nebraska and Grand Island’s Tyler Andreasen. Thompson, Martin and Fullerton, Nebraska’s Jim Buss won the early Hobby Stock heat races.
Working the bugs out didn’t take long as Grand Island’s David Dembowski was a force to be reckoned with in the front of the field of the IMCA Sport Compact Feature. Dembowk dominated in leading all 10-laps of the feature. Multi-time feature winner in Lexington, Dalton Smith of Gibbon, NE ran wide open and flirted with the cushion to finish as the runner-up. The Dodge Neon piloted by Jose Sabala of North Platte, through the high banks and sped down the straightaways to finish third overall in the Feature. Rounding out the top five in the IMCA Sport Compact Feature were North Platte’s Josh Williams and Demi Murray of Oberlin, Kansas; after going for a wild ride, flipping numerous times off of the entry to corner four while leading her heat race.
