Berck Takes the Honors again at the Dawson County Raceway!

No stranger to the winners circle, the Marquette Missle Kyle Berck and his crew captured their fourth straight SLMR Feature win by taking the checkered flag at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday

The racing action was fast and furious as the Super Late Model Racing(SLMR) Series invaded the Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday night along with the thunder and lightning performance by the IMCA Modifieds, Northern Sport Mods, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Walking away a feature winner when the dust settled were Kyle Berck, David Murray Jr, Jesse Sobbing, Mike Nichols and Dillon Thompson.
Winning his fourth straight feature was the Marquette Missle Kyle Berck in the SLMR highlighted event. Berck started in the second row and garnered the lead on the third lap and never looked back in picking up the feature victory. Starting right next to Berck in the starting grid of the feature was Travis Dickes of Madison, as he chased Berck throughout the contest and wasn’t able to advance past the hotshoe and was forced to settle for runner-up honors. Heat race winner Mike Marushak from David City started in the third row of the feature and was able to get high up on the wheel and drive his way onto the podium in third place overall. Early leader and pole sitter Steve Kempt of Shelton is no stranger to Dawson County Raceway and he proved to know the fast way around the 3/8 mile oval, pacing the field for the first two laps, running high, wide and handsome on the cushion. Rounding out your top five in the feature event was potential hardcharger award winner Bill Leighton Jr, as he finished fifth overall from his sixth row starting position. Joining Marushak in winning SLMR heat races was Council Bluffs, Iowa’s Mike Collins and the SLMR points leader coming into the weekend Justin Zeitner of LaVista.
Wasting no time to get to the front was Oberlin, Kansas wheelman David Murray Jr, as he led from the second lap until driving under the checkered flag to claim the IMCA Modified Feature win. Murray was heavy on the gas in the early events of the night in claiming the heat race win also. Starting in the second row of the feature, allowed Steve Aitken of Cozad to avoid all incidents and have clean air to drive in all the way to the runner-up position. The ‘Brady Bullet’ Dave Pedersen used his front row starting position to battle for a spot on the podium and his efforts were rewarded with third place accolades overall. Heat race winner Chuck Stryker, the ‘Eddyville Flyer’came home fourth, slipping past Scott Smith of Davenport on the closing laps, forcing Smith to settle for fifth place honors. Cozad’s Cale Osborn was high on the wheel in the heat race and picked up a checkered flag effort and was well on his way to a top five finish, before he had a mishap in corner three, sending him to the back of the field on the restart with just two laps remaining.
No stranger to the winners circle is Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa as he added yet another feature victory by taking the lead on the sixth circuit and leading the rest of the way in the Northern Sport Mod division. Sobbing was the class of the field in his heat race in earlier competition, notching the win. Leading the way for the initial five laps was pole sitter Kerry Jones of North Platte. Last time DCR raced, Cozad’s Colton Osborn notched a big feature win, and he was working on his second straight, but it wasn’t quite meant to be as he had to settle on the runner-up honors in the spotlighted event of the night for Northern Sport Mods. Putting on a clean passing clinic for all in attendance, heat race winner Brian Kosiski of Papillion drove from the sixth row to finish third overall and as luck would have it, avoided all incidents that claimed numerous drivers that were battling for position.  Rounding out your top five finishers in the Feature was North Platte’s Corey Cruzan and heat race winner Jamey Kennicutt crossed the finish line in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Continuing his reign on the oval in the IMCA Stock Cars was National Points leader Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa. Nichols took the lead on a three-wide battle on the fifth lap and was heavy on the loud pedal to power his way to the checkered flag. Doing his best to rundown Nichols, was Maywood’s Casey Werkmeister. Werkmeister gave Nichols all he wanted on the restarts, but Nichols was unfazed as he garnered the top honors, and Werkmeister was second overall, both were heat race victors. Starting in contention for podium honors was all the motivation needed as Wallace’ wheelman Brandon Clough finished third overall. Working their way through traffic the best was Casey Woken of Ogallala, who finished fourth after starting in the fourth row was trumped for hard charger honors by Eddyville’s Dan Walker, who drove the wheels off his Chevy Monte Carlo to fifth place after starting in the seventh row.
Going to the high groove and making it work paid dividends on restarts and during the late laps for Campbell’s Dillon Thompson, who claimed the bragging rights and victory in the IMCA Hobby Stocks Feature event. Finally after seeing how well Thompson was riding the high groove, Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island stepped up onto the cushion around the oval and drove his way to a big-time runner up finish. Lady Eagle National points leader Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk may have arrived late due to circumstances she couldn’t prevent, but it wasn’t the demise of the Big Daddy piloted by Bittner, as she flirted with holding onto the lead and was around the leaders throughout the contest, before settling for third place accolades. Rounding our your top five in the Hobby Stock Feature was Russ Speck of Hastings and Caleb Hetrick of Grand Island in fourth and fifth respectively.
Racing action returns to Dawson County Raceway this upcoming Sunday night, July 15th with the gates opening at 5 p.m. and the first scheduled green flag will drop at 6:30 p.m.
