Radcliffe, Murray, Sobbing, Nichols & Thompson take the Checkers!

Putting a great show for the fans in the stands and all in attendance during the IMCA hobby stock Feature was 95b-Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk and Campbel's Dillon Thompson. Thompson completed a final lap pass with the assistance of lap traffic to notch the feature victory on Sunday night in Lexington, Nebraska.

The racing action was scorching hot like the Hot July Climate at the Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday with the lightning fast cars piloted by Jeff Radcliffe, David Murray Jr, Jesse Sobbing, Mike Nichols and Dillon Thompson taking home checkered flag accolades in their respective Feature events.

Leading the last lap was all that mattered for Jeff Radcliffe of Hills City, Kansas as he drove forward from his fourth row starting position to lead the final lap to notch the United Rebel Sprint Series (URSS) victory. Thinking he had the car to beat, leading from the halfway point until the final lap was Mark Wallinder of Wheatridge, Colorado. Dodge City, Kansas hotshoe Brian Herbert was the feature event winner the last time that the URSSS cars were showcased at DCR, but this time out a nearly all green flag feature didn’t allow Herbert to run to the front from his fifth row starting position. Getting high on the wheel and driving their way into the top five finishers was Tommy Williams and heat race winner Mike Saathoff, both of North Platte, as the crossed the finish line in fourth and fifth place overall.

Battling a dry-slick track and using terrific throttle control, Oberlin, Kansas legend David Murray was in contention throughout the IMCA Modified feature, but it was only the final five laps that he paced the field after a yellow flag allowed him to inherit the lead from a spinning Jay Steffens of North Platte, who recovered quite nicely coming from the back of the pack in two laps to finish fourth overall. Running up-front and avoiding incidents throughout the contest was Cozad wheelman Cale Osborn who took home runner-up honors. Finishing on the podium in third place overall was Steve Aitken of Cozad, who lead the initial five laps of the feature and then regarnered the lead for a trio of circuits near the midway point. Capping off the top finishers, Ogallala’s Cole Hodges recovered quite nicely from an early lap fender-bender to earn fifth place honors. Murray Jr and Ronnie Wallace of McCook won early in the night heat races in the IMCA Modified division.

Putting on a dominating performance like he has done all season, heat race winner Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa raced with gumption in grabbing the lead on lap two and never looking back in the IMCA Northern Sport Mods feature to win yet another Feature event. Rushing forward from his third row starting position, Gothenburg’s Jamey Kennicutt had a nifty night behind the wheel, in finishing in second place overall after winning the second heat race of the night for Northern Sport Mods. Displaying great effort and grit, Cozad’s Colton Osborn see-sawed at the wheel to run the high and low grooves to finish on the podium in third place overall. Rounding out your top five was Bryan Herrick of Curtis and first time visitor to DCR, Jeff Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

No stranger to the winners circle in Lexington, fan-favorite and heat race winner Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa took the lead on the third lap and was in complete control to ice yet another Feature win in the IMCA Stock Car division. Maywood missile Casey Werkmeister wasted no time to get to the front from sixth row starting spot to avoid any and all incidents to chase Nichols throughout the contest, with numerous exchanges between the pair bringing fans in the stands to the edge of their seats. Crossing the finish line third but missing the tech area was McClelland, Iowa’s Jeff Joldersma which moved him to the bottom of the finishers, who also claimed an earlier in the night heat race win. Earning the show honors in the feature event was Casey Woken of Ogallala who had to overcome a spin on the front straightaway in the waning laps to earn his podium finish. Battling throughout the contest in fine fashion, Brandon Clough of Wallace and North Platte’s Sara Klein were neck-and-neck in the showdown for top honors, with Clough getting the nod for fourth place overall and Klein taking home fifth place accolades.

Using lap traffic to reel in the leader and pass for the win was the name of the game plan for Campbell’s Dillon Thompson as he passed Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk during the final two laps to win the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Bittner stayed on the  positive side of the table after relinquishing the lead during the final lap to recover quite nicely with a runner-up finish. Leading in the early going was enough to keep Ryan Gardine of Bertrand out of trouble and into a third place finish in the night’s feature event. Battling tooth and nail for points and the chance to garner the lead on the points sheets, Tyler Andreason of Grand Island and Wilcox’s Anthony Martin crossed the finish line in fourth and fifth place overall.

Racing action returns to the fan-favorite 3/8th mile dirt high banks of Dawson County Raceway on Sunday August 5th. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
